Students often write different kinds of research papers. And in each research paper they may support their statements with examples or quotes taken from other sources (books, journals, web sites articles etc.). Sometimes students confuse two different notions as research paper citations and research paper references. While writing the paper, you should clear out for yourself the difference between the citations and references. Research paper citation is a direct citation taken from the source and placed in the midst of the text of the research paper. Research paper reference is the list of the issues (books, periodical material) and web sites from which you have taken the information. And here you use not direct quotes but you just paraphrase somebody’s thought or idea. In other words, reference list is the list of references that were used as the basis for your research paper. Research paper list is usually given after the conclusion and is titled as bibliography or list of references.
In your research paper you should provide both – citations and references. Standard reference information should include the author’s surname, the issue’s date of publication, the title of the book, the title of the publication if it is a journal, the name of the publisher, and page numbers.
If you use APA style then you should place citations in parenthetical notes. According to the rules of APA writing style you should provide right after the citation the author’s name, the year of the issue’s publication and the page where the reader may find the given quote. If you have already used the author’s surname in the sentence (e.g. Brown points out that…) then you should give in parenthetical notes only the year of book’s issue and citation page number.
MLA citation style is similar to APA except few differences. According to MLA style you should also place reference to the citation in parenthetical notes. But unlike APA style in MLA you should never point out the year of the book’s publication and page number should be compulsory added to the reference information. There is one more difference between the APA and MLA style. In MLA when giving the page number you should never put the abbreviation “p.”, which is featured in APA style.
